Mapping the Collection

Japan in Saikaku's time was divided into 68 provinces, which functioned both as geographic and political units.  At the beginning of the Meiji Period (1868-1912), the provinces were restructured into the prefectural system that exists today in Japan.

Saikaku's tales direct his readers to familiar and unfamiliar locales across the provinces of seventeenth-century Japan.
